A Newbiginian Revolution
[J]ust as we refuse to believe that there is no third possibility between a false objectivity and a false subjectivity, both of which have as their common factor the abdication of personal responsibility to seek out and know the truth, so in the public field we refuse to accept the idea that there is no third possibility between some sort of theocracy, perhaps a return to an idealized picture of medieval Christendom, on the one hand, and agnostic pluralism on the other. The corollary of Polanyi’s idea of responsible personal knowledge is a society in which this responsibility is acknowledged and respected. Clearly the Church ought to be the model and the nursery of such a society.
